The complexity and rich essence of the nursing profession are paralleled by the complexity of its context in professional practice. In most other works, the practitioner maintains a certain modicum of control over the pace, environment, system process, and density of the services they render. They typically can limit their attention to a single patient, problem, or task at a time. But in nursing, patient encounters are less controlled, often spontaneous, unpredictable, and generally present simultaneously. These encounters can require some “batch processing”; however, most patient service requests require one-on-one attention. 

Nursing is indeed a hybrid profession, an interdisciplinary and inter-professional nexus of roles, skills, and duty obligations in providing safe patient care––nonetheless, at its core––remains the caring nature and advocacy expectation for tending to the needs of those who are ill. 

Over the past sixty years, a tremendous shift of responsibility from physicians to nurses in all health care settings has occurred. Physicians in many specialties now function primarily as diagnosticians and prescribe treatment protocols and regimens. Given the nature of the intervention, the nurse's quick and early identification of changes in a patient physical condition requires attentiveness and sound clinical judgment multiplied with the increasing acuity level of hospitalized patients. Moreover, “doctor orders” have changed from specific directions to practice guidelines and parameters for nurses to assess and adjust therapies according to the patients’ responses judiciously. It is imperative for MD-RN communication and coordination between nursing and medicine becomes imperative. Studies have shown improved patient outcomes when nursing.
